burrswood Workshops

I’m a photographer with more than 50 years experience. I’ve learned many skills, which I want to share with other photographers. I qualified as an adult education teacher 15 years ago taught successful examination classes over a number of years, with a focus on practical skills rather than theory.

My workshops are informal and practical and concentrate on taking better pictures, rather than learning technical skills for their own sake.

During the spring I’m running a series of workshops based at Burrswood Estate in Groombridge, near Tunbridge Wells.

The estate has beautiful woodlands and gardens, as well as great conference facilities and an on-site cafe.

Burrswood Workshop Schedule

Spring Photography Sunday 5th May 10:00 – 16:00

The gardens at Burrswood are full of specimen trees and shrubs which make for an amazing springtime display. This workshop gives you the chance to photograph the grounds before they close at the end of June

The workshop begins with a briefing session and discussion of the best photo opportunities for the day. We will then go out and take pictures until lunchtime, when we will have a review of the day so far. After lunch (bring your own or use the on-site café) we will take some more pictures and then come back to the course room to review and edit our photographs before leaving at 16:00

Cost £49-00

Photo Walk Sunday 12th May 2pm - 4:30pm

A chance to photograph the gardens and woodlands surrounding Burrswood House with a small group of like minded photographers. I will show you the best places to photograph and be available throughout the afternoon to give one to one tuition if needed.

Cost £24-00

Turning Your Hobby into a Business Saturday 18th May 14:00 – 17:00

Many photographers have an ambition to turn their hobby into a business, either as their main source of income, or as a side-line.

This workshop will help you to understand the many pitfalls and opportunities that budding professional photographers face and to hopefully come away with some firm ideas as to the next steps.

Having spent many years running successful businesses and working with start-up businesses (including my own!), I’m well placed to give you the guidance you will need.

The workshop covers:

·      The marketplace – everybody is a photographer now (or are they?)

·      Market sectors – what are they and what do you have to offer?

·      Differentiating your business from the rest of the crowd

·      Value propositions and Pricing

·      Why you need a business plan and how to prepare one?

·      How can I make a profit?

·      Funding – What will it cost and where can I get the money from?

·      Marketing – How do I go about getting business

·      Psychographic profiling your customers

·      Accounts, legals and stuff

You will receive a full set of notes, a business plan template and spreadsheet as part of the workshop

Burrswood stands in acres of undisturbed mature woodland. The workshop encourages you to explore the woods and photograph the many interesting scenes that you will find, including the lakes and ponds that are scattered around the estate.

Getting to Grips With Your Camera Saturday 15th June 10:00 – 16:00

This workshop is for you if you struggle to get your camera out of auto mode. In the morning we will explain what the various controls do, which ones you will use most and when.

Once we have covered the theory we will go out into the grounds and put your new skills into practice, photographing the amazing gardens, woods and landscape that Burrswood sits in.

There will be a break for lunch (bring your own or use the on-site café) after which we will review the results from the morning and hopefully have time to take more pictures before finishing at 16:00
